On May 17th myself along with my family participated in Race 4 Souls, a 5km Charity run / walk supporting Souls 4 Soles.
For me and everyone that knows me well, shoes are a HUGE part of my life. My closet looks more like a mini shoe store than a wardrobe. I never get my shoes to match my outfit i match my outfits to my shoes!
When i first heard about the work Maggi Thorne, Mrs International 2014 was doing acorss her community and globe i was truly affected in a very powerful way. It had honestly never occured to me that some people arent afforded the luxury of owning a basic essential item such as a pair of shoes. I began to imagine how different my life would be if i only had one special pair to wear on my feet and i felt saddened. I knew i had to support this cause, develop an action plan and act accordingly.
I researched Souls 4 Soles Australia and found out the in my home country we only have one sorting and distribution location down in South Australia (14 hour drive away). I spoke with the australian director who advised that she did not have any transport companies that the australian organization was affiliated with in order to have shoes from interstate directed down to her for grouping.
I contacted several transport companies with information on Souls 4 Soles with the hope and aim for them to reach out and assist where possible.
I contacted family and friends and asked for shoe donations in the lead up to May 17th and in total received over 60 pairs that i am positive have since been put to good use.
So, i walked the 5kms with my beautkful family. My youngest in her stroller, my eldest by my side. We took many rests as little feet would get mighty tired quite quickly. We stopped half way and had a family play in the park and got some pictures.
Walking around my neighbourhood of Ropes Crossing allowed me the honour of speaking with people about what souls for soles do across the globe and how they can help better the lives of others one pair at a time. I spoke about the international pageant system and my platform, "speak out, shatter the silence"- no to Domestic Abuse.
The weather conditions were perfect and included a nice cool breeze to help keep us relaxed on our walk. Overall, it was a memorable day with my wonderful family.
Now, almost 2 months after the walk i have collected almost another 45 pairs to go to this noble cause.
I am so pleased that Maggi reached out to so many in the hopes of generating awareness, funds and shoes in order to better the lives of others.
I definately have a new respect for how lucky i am to own more than one pair of shoes and i am aware that that by giving shoes i am giving love. There can never be to much love in this world.
